Tinnitus is a debilitating condition that affects nearly 10 percent of the patient population. Although there is no specifically tailored treatment, recent studies performed at UPMC have shown that targeting auditory circuits and certain cellular mechanisms may help effectively treat tinnitus.
Thanos Tzounopoulos, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, discusses how he has extensively studied the cellular and molecular mechanisms of tinnitus, and is working towards a viable treatment for the disorder.
