Tinnitus is a common problem that affects about 1 in 5 people. Commonly known as ‘ringing in the ears’ that gives the sensation of hearing a ringing, buzzing, hissing, chirping, whistling, or other sounds within the ear. This condition isn’t necessarily a condition itself, rather, it is a symptom of an underlying condition such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury, ear infection or circulatory system disorder.

As for the cause of getting Tinnitus, you might be surprised because although tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss, it does not cause the loss, nor does a hearing loss cause tinnitus. In fact, some people with tinnitus experience no difficulty hearing, and in a few cases they even become so acutely sensitive to sound that they must take steps to muffle or mask external noises.

Some instances of tinnitus are caused by infections or blockages in the ear, and the tinnitus can disappear once the underlying cause is treated. Long exposure to loud sounds is the most common cause of tinnitus. A single exposure to a sudden extremely loud noise can also cause tinnitus. Example for this would be an extremely loud explosion near you.

Additionally, Tinnitus can also worsen in some people if they drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, drink caffeinated beverages, or eat certain foods. And, for reasons not yet entirely clear to researchers, stress and fatigue seem to worsen tinnitus as well.

It is often worse when background noise is low, so you may be most aware of it at night when you’re trying to fall asleep in a quiet room. In rare cases, the sound beats in sync with your heart (pulsatile tinnitus).

Once again, Tinnitus symptoms include these types of phantom noises in your ears:

Ringing
Buzzing
Hissing
Chirping
Whistling
Or Other sounds within the ear

Now, there are many kinds of Tinnitus, but the most notable ones are these two:

Subjective tinnitus wherein the ringing is something that only you can hear. This is the most common type of tinnitus. It can be caused by ear problems in your outer, middle or inner ear.

Objective tinnitus is the second type is a rare type where your doctor can hear when he or she does an examination. This type is likely to be caused by a blood vessel problem, an inner ear bone condition or muscle contractions.

And if there are a lot of different kinds of tinnitus here are also many types of traditional medical treatments that you can try to treat tinnitus but first you have to see a doctor and make sure that you do have it.

Proceeding to medications such as Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline, or Alprazolam are some that may help you treat or lessen Tinnitus.

And yes, though there is a myriad of medical treatments that you can choose to help you cure your tinnitus, I have to warn you though, that there are treatments that might have dangerous side effects. For example, if you were to go on medications to treat the condition, using Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline and nortriptyline, known to be used only for severe cases of Tinnitus, these can cause troublesome side effects, including dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation and heart problems.

Then there is the use of Alprazolam that may help to reduce Tinnitus symptoms, however, the side effects of using this medication are drowsiness and nausea. It can also become habit-forming.

If there are the traditional medical treatments, then there are natural home remedies as well. You can start simple such as removing some earwax. Removing said earwax is known to decrease tinnitus symptoms. You can also try suppressing tinnitus using white noise. Such as the sound of rain, or the ocean. These can be great when on a pillow speakers in your bedroom for when you sleep. Fans, humidifiers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners in the bedroom may also help cover the internal noise at night.
